Workshop Objectives:

  1. Gain a stronger understanding of intervals, scale theory, chord theory, harmony, timing, rhythm, dynamics, reading, writing and creating.
  2. Learn techniques to enhance ear training and instrument motor skills.
  3. Learn to communicate with musicians of similar and different instrument orientation and understand what they are doing.
  4. Learn to play and write music in various styles in groups of different sizes and instrumentation.
  5. Gain performance experience.
  6. Create lasting relationships and musical bonds with fellow musicians in your community and school.

Workshop Criteria:

  1. You must be able to play/sing the major scale in the following key for your instrument. Be familiar with these notes, and practice playing and singing them interchangeably in a fluid, connected manner.

    • C Major (C,D,E,F,G,A,B): Voice, Piano/Keyboard, Ukulele, Guitar, Bass, Flute, Oboe, Bassoon, Trombone, Tuba, Baritone (in bass clef), Violin, Viola, Cello, Upright Bass, Melodica, Accordion.
    • D Major (D,E,F#,G,A,B,C#): Trumpet, Clarinet, Bass Clarinet, Tenor Sax, Baritone (in treble clef).
    • A Major (A,B,C#,D,E,F#,G#): Alto Sax, Baritone Sax, Alto Clarinet.
    • F Major (F,G,A,Bb,C,D,E): French Horn.
    • Guitarist and Key Players should be able to play these basic cords (C • Dm • Em • F • G • Am • Bdim)

  2. You must be able to count and read rhythm in whole notes, half notes, quarter notes, eighth notes and sixteenth notes.

  3. You must bring your own instrument.
